In order to visit prisoners in the Special Confinement Unit (SCU), attorneys and other members of the legal team must first undergo a criminal background check by submitting a completed National Crime Information Center (NCIC) form to the SCU Counselor, Andrew Sutton. (Non-attorney members of the legal team must also submit an additional form, which must be signed by the attorney for the client.) Once the background check is complete, legal visits can be arranged by contacting Counselor Sutton directly at 812.244.4572 and scheduling a date and time for the visit.
Please note: Visits can generally begin as early as 8:00 AM and need to be completed by 3:00 PM. It is recommended that visitors arrive as close to 8:00 AM as possible, as it can take between 30 to 60 minutes to be processed at the front desk, go through security, and be escorted to the SCU. [N.B: In the past, prison staff would not escort visitors into or out of the SCU during the hours of 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM; apparently, this is no longer the case. That said, if you plan to arrive later in the day for a visit, it is always best to confirm with prison staff when you make your arrangements that you will be able to enter and exit the SCU during the hours of your visit.]
